Subterranean Water Ecology

Lab Ecoacque 1

The Subterranean Water Ecology Laboratory investigates the effects of chemical contaminants, temperature rises and changes in water volumes due to climate change on subterranean ecosystems, including alluvial aquifers, hyporheic zones, caves and springs. Research activities focus on the ecological role of subterranean invertebrates, studying their survival, reproductive strategies, metabolism, behaviour and movements. The aim is to understand how these organisms contribute to ecosystem services, such as maintaining water quality, and to assess the consequences of anthropogenic and environmental pressures on these delicate habitats.
