The facility is part of the experimental network of the PRIN PNRR project “CAROLINA” and aims to explore the potential of extensive grassland management in association with different climatic conditions in terms of (i) ability to provide ecosystem services such as biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration and (ii) resilience of the grassland ecosystem to climate and land use changes. The site has been established in an extensive meadow-grassland at Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli Regional Park and is equipped with grazing exclusion plots and rain shelters to reduce water supply through rainfall, as well as an automatic soil respiration measurement system and weather sensors powered by solar panels. San Rossore also has a chronosequence from grasslands to secondary forests on which changes in plant functional and taxonomic diversity and soil properties are studied.
