AIRFRESH Forest

Bosco Airfresh

The urban infrastructure ‘AIRFRESH Forest’ is located on the outskirts of the municipality of Florence in San Bartolo a Cintoia. The new experimental green area has an extension of about 0.55 hectares and hosts 170 trees, belonging to 5 different species: Tilia platyphyllos, Acer rubrum, Acer opalus, Ulmus ‘Plinio’ and Cupressus sempervirens. The planting was carried out as part of the AIRFRESH (Air pollution removal by urban forests for a better human well-being) project with the aim of quantifying, with direct measurements, the removal capacity of the main air pollutants (PM10 and PM2.5, NO2 and O3). Data collection is carried out using a network of environmental sensors (Airquino) that monitor the concentrations above and below the canopy.

The infrastructure is managed by IRET and aims to assess the ecosystem services provided by the forest and the related environmental and socio-economic benefits.
