Pesticide resistance of rodents on Italian islands: a widespread phenomenon harmful to the environment and biodiversity

The presence of invasive rodents such as rats or mice on Mediterranean islands, which are rich in biodiversity and have a conspicuous human presence, poses a serious threat to these delicate ecosystems, in addition to causing serious damage to human activities. Rodent control in these environments is frequently done through the use of rodenticides based on anticoagulant active ingredients and which , if used without following proper guidelines, can have serious environmental impacts due to the possible direct or secondary poisoning

Ink disease, remote sensing can be used to monitor its spread

Satellite remote sensing data may be particularly useful in monitoring the “ink disease” epidemic in Italian forests. This is shown by a study, published in the journal Remote Sensing Applications: Society and Environment, conducted by scientists from the National Research Council’s Institute for Research on Terrestrial Ecosystems (CNR-IRET), in collaboration with the University of Tuscia and the Eberswalde University of Sustainable Development. The research team used satellite remote sensing data to monitor ink disease in chestnut and cork oak forests

On Nature Communications, a publication demonstrates the partial asynchrony between carbon assimilation and xylogenesis in Northern Hemisphere forests

Forests play an important role in climate change mitigation. The relationship between seasonal carbon uptake and its allocation in woody biomass remains poorly understood, leaving a significant gap in our ability to predict carbon sequestration by forests. The intra-annual dynamics of carbon fluxes and wood formation and the dynamics of carbon assimilation and formation of nonstructural carbohydrates to their incorporation into woody tissues in different Northern Hemisphere ecosystems were compared for the first time. Seasonal peaks of carbon assimilation (GPP) and

To Elena Marra the IUFRO ODRA Award

Elena Marra, a technologist at IRET in Florence, Italy, was awarded the renowned IUFRO Outstanding Doctoral Research Award (ODRA). This award is given every five years to nine doctoral students who have distinguished themselves for excellence in forestry. The award was given to Elena for her innovative work that improved the understanding of the physiological and morphological response of forest plants to environmental stresses by using a meta-analytical approach and implementing two innovative methods to estimate the soil impact caused

Elena Paoletti named vice president of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO)

During the closing ceremony of the World Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), Elena Paoletti was awarded the prestigious position of vice president of the same Union. Elena Paoletti, a research executive at the Terrestrial Ecosystems Research Institute (CNR-Iret) and head of the Secondary Operations Unit in Florence, received this important position during the last IUFRO Scientific Congress, held in Stockholm June 23-29 with the theme “Forests and Society towards 2050.” The IUFRO Union is a

On Nature, a publication highlights the importance of green spaces

Urban forests can make European cities more livable during the heat waves that increasingly characterize the climate. That is the central focus of an article published in the journal Nature by Theodore A. Endreny, visiting professor at the National Research Council’s Institute for Terrestrial Ecosystem Research and professor at the State University of New York. Urban greencooling services, the publication says, are particularly needed in Europe’s most vulnerable environments, the same environments least served by these essential services. More info Link to

NbS Italy Hub at the Accademia dei Lincei

Environment Day 2024 was held on June 5 at the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific institutes in Europe. The guest speaker at the prestigious event was the Director of the Institute for Research on Terrestrial Ecosystems of the National Research Council (CNR-IRET), Carlo Calfapietra, who with his contribution “Nature-Based Solutions: a great opportunity for restoration and sustainable development” brought with him valuable reflections and arguments regarding Nature-Based Solutions and the experience of NbS

Biodiversity and the health of the globe: in the prestigious journal The Lancet, NBFC group issues a call for integrated action

With the increasing loss of biodiversity, there is an increased need to identify targeted global research and conservation strategies. This is the key concept emerging from an article, published in the prestigious journal The Lancet and authored by experts from the National Biodiversity Future Centre (NBFC). The working group, coordinated by Hellas Cena and Massimo Labra, emphasizes the correlation between safeguarding the species that populate the planet and human well-being. The NBFC, an Italian project involving more than 1,500 researchers
